AP Literature is typically taken by high school seniors and assumes that students are familiar with a the classics of western literature.  Unfortunately, if a student tried to read all of the potential books cited by previous AP Lit exams, they wouldn't have time for the rest of their courses and would likely fail out of school.  Since some books are cited much more than others, the wise student will at a minimum read only the most highly cited works and spread out the reading over a few years so that it doesn't get overwhelming.  Below is a list of the top cited works on previous AP Lit tests, which is adapted from a widely circulated list by Norma J. Wilkerson.
